The Atlanta Braves have officially cut ties with pitcher Ian Anderson, marking the end of what was once a promising tenure with the organization. Anderson, who played a key role in the Braves’ 2021 World Series run, has struggled in recent seasons due to inconsistency and injury setbacks, most notably undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. Despite early career success, his recent performances failed to meet expectations, prompting Atlanta to move on.
The Braves initially traded Anderson to the Los Angeles Angels on March 23, 2025, in exchange for left-handed reliever José Suárez. However, Anderson’s stint with the Angels was short-lived. Over just seven relief appearances, he posted a 11.57 ERA, leading the Angels to designate him for assignment barely a month later, on April 24.
Two days after the DFA, the Braves reclaimed Anderson off waivers, bringing him back to the organization in hopes of a turnaround. However, the reunion was brief. Just days later, on April 29, the Braves designated him for assignment once again, effectively ending their association with the right-hander for the second time in just over a month.

Anderson’s time in Atlanta began with high expectations after being selected third overall in the 2016 MLB Draft. He quickly rose through the minors and made an immediate impact at the major league level, particularly during the 2020 and 2021 postseasons. His ability to perform under pressure made him a fan favorite and a vital piece of Atlanta’s championship roster.
Despite those highs, the last two seasons were marred by poor performance and injury. After Tommy John surgery and limited success during rehab, Anderson never regained his former effectiveness. While his recent DFA closes a chapter with the Braves, there’s still hope he can find a fresh start elsewhere and reignite his once-promising career.
