Ahead of their four-game series in Cincinnati on Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals are set to promote a familiar face to Reds fans — former Cincinnati top prospect José Barrero, according to Francys Romero.
The 27-year-old utility player, who can play both infield and outfield, will join the big league club, while infielder Thomas Saggese is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
The Cardinals will also need to make an additional roster move to clear space for Barrero on the 40-man roster.
Originally signed by the Reds in June 2017, Barrero spent six years in the organization and debuted in the majors in 2020.
Over 139 games with Cincinnati from 2020 to 2023, he posted a .186 average with four home runs, 32 RBIs, and 163 strikeouts.
After a short time in the Texas Rangers’ minor league system, he signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals in November.

Barrero had a solid Spring Training with St. Louis, hitting .227 with two homers, eight RBIs, and four steals in 24 games. At the time of his call-up, he was riding a 19-game on-base streak with Triple-A Memphis, batting .299 with four home runs and 14 RBIs.
Despite a strong showing in limited MLB appearances this season — slashing .341/.364/.512 over 44 plate appearances — Saggese is being sent down for more regular at-bats, per MLB.com’s John Denton.
Right-hander Andre Pallante (2-1, 4.05 ERA) is scheduled to start Monday’s series opener against the Reds, with first pitch set for 5:40 p.m. CT.
