Huge Turn On: Red Wings Shock the NHL with Blockbuster Trade, Acquiring $51.2 Million Star in Major Deal

The Detroit Red Wings are in need of a starting goalie, and one proposed trade would see them make a major move to fill that gap.

Using the PuckGM tool on PuckPedia, a trade scenario has been suggested that would send goalie John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks to Detroit in a high-profile deal. In this proposed trade, the Red Wings would receive Gibson and a 2025 fifth-round pick from Edmonton, while the Ducks would get top goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa, forward Jonatan Berggren, and a pair of draft picks: a 2025 second-round pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick from Tampa Bay.

The deal would be significant, with Detroit acquiring a star goalie in Gibson, who would take over as their starting netminder. Gibson, who still has two years remaining on his eight-year, $51.2 million contract, posted an 11-11-2 record last season with a 2.77 GAA and a .912 SV%. For Anaheim, they’d gain Cossa, a promising young goalie drafted 15th overall in 2021, as well as Berggren, a forward who could add depth to their roster, along with two draft picks.

This trade addresses the Red Wings’ long-standing issue at the goaltending position. General Manager Steve Yzerman recently stated that the team needs to improve in net, acknowledging that better goaltending is key to their playoff aspirations. Head coach Todd McLellan echoed those sentiments, emphasizing that improving goaltending is a collective responsibility for everyone involved.

While the Red Wings currently have Petr Mrazek and Cam Talbot under contract for next season, Cossa could be ready to compete for a spot. However, acquiring a seasoned star like Gibson could be the solution Detroit needs to elevate their goaltending and take a step toward playoff contention. Gibson, who has been the subject of trade rumors for years, has expressed openness to being dealt, especially with Lukas Dostal emerging as the Ducks’ new starter.
