Tough To Make: Reds’ Tyler Callihan Suffers Multiple Broken Bones, Forcing Team Into Critical Decision

During Monday night’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves, rookie outfielder Tyler Callihan suffered a serious injury after crashing into the left-field wall in foul territory. The play resulted in an inside-the-park home run, and Callihan had to exit the game immediately. For those who didn’t see it live, the aftermath of the collision was difficult to watch.

It quickly became apparent that Callihan had suffered a significant injury. About an hour later, the Reds confirmed he had broken his arm. Postgame, manager Terry Francona shared even more troubling news: Callihan had multiple fractures in his arm and would return to Cincinnati for surgery, according to Mark Sheldon of Reds.com.

Monday marked just the fourth game of Callihan’s major league career. After going hitless in his debut doubleheader against St. Louis, he collected his first MLB hit on Saturday against Washington. Earlier in Monday’s game, he delivered a line drive single to center field in a key moment, driving in Jake Fraley from third.

Callihan, a third-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, now faces a lengthy recovery before he’ll get another chance to add to his hit total. There’s no official timetable for his return yet; more information is expected following his surgery and further medical evaluation in Cincinnati.
