The Yankees didn’t need Carlos Carrasco to make his scheduled start this week after Clarke Schmidt’s outing was delayed a few days due to side soreness.
That delay ultimately signaled the end—at least temporarily—of Carrasco’s stint with the team this season.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Yankees designated Carrasco for assignment—the same day he would’ve pitched if Schmidt had remained on schedule.
To fill the roster spot, the team called up reliever Yerry De Los Santos. He previously impressed with two scoreless innings as the 27th man during a doubleheader on April 27. In Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, De Los Santos has logged a 1.74 ERA across 10 appearances this season.

Carrasco had earned a rotation role during spring training as a non-roster invitee and made the Opening Day roster amid injuries to Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, and Schmidt.
However, his performance faltered over eight appearances (six starts), with a 5.91 ERA over 32 innings. He struggled with hard contact, giving up seven home runs. His most recent outing was three innings of relief work against the Rays on Sunday.
Looking ahead, Ryan Yarbrough could continue in Carrasco’s place in the rotation after a recent spot start. Another option is Triple-A starter Allan Winans, though bringing him up would require a roster move.
