When the Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman, there was significant controversy surrounding whether Rafael Devers would move to the DH role, allowing Bregman, a stronger defensive third baseman, to take over at third base. Initially, Devers rejected the idea, but over time, he accepted the shift and became the everyday DH.
Now, with Triston Casas injured, the Red Sox have asked Devers to transition to first base. This move has sparked tension similar to the earlier third-to-DH shift, and things have quickly soured.
Devers made concerning remarks on Thursday about his reluctance to play first base, drawing negative attention to both himself and the team.
This ongoing friction between Devers and the Red Sox front office seems to have been simmering throughout the season and could potentially lead to his exit from Boston.
If Devers does depart, the Chicago Cubs could be an ideal destination. The Cubs have struggled with consistency at third base, and acquiring Devers would stabilize the position.
The trade to bring him to Chicago would likely involve a substantial package, which could include prospects like Matt Shaw (Cubs No. 4), Kevin Alcántara (Cubs No. 6), Jack Neely (Cubs No. 16), and utility player Jon Berti.

This trade would allow the Red Sox to part with a player whose relationship with the team appears increasingly strained while giving the Cubs a much-needed solution at third base. In return, Boston would gain a solid group of young, controllable prospects.
While it’s uncertain how likely a trade will happen, if the Red Sox decide to make Devers available, the Cubs should be ready to offer a compelling deal. If so, Devers could very well find himself playing at Wrigley Field for the remainder of his contract.
