Many New York Giants fans were left puzzled when the team chose to retain head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen after a dismal 3-14 finish to the 2024 season. Despite widespread criticism, team owner John Mara opted to keep both in place for the 2025 campaign.
As part of their strategy to turn things around, the Giants focused on upgrading their quarterback situation. During the offseason, they brought in veterans Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson, and used their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to select quarterback Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss.

During a recent interview with Kay Adams, Schoen addressed the selection of Dart. When asked whether Dart was specifically Daboll’s choice or a shared decision, Schoen emphasized it was a team effort: “It was an organizational decision. Any player we take, it’s a collaborative process.”

While that’s a standard line, Schoen acknowledged that Daboll’s offensive experience was a significant factor. As the former offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, Daboll played a key role in developing Josh Allen—something the Giants hope he can replicate with Dart.
The Giants ultimately chose Dart over another heavily-scouted prospect, Shedeur Sanders. Though Dart will begin the season as a backup, the team views him as a potential long-term solution at quarterback.
