Shocking Turn: Packers Confirm Departure of Another Top Player

The Green Bay Packers are facing a surplus at wide receiver following the 2025 NFL Draft, prompting speculation that the team could explore trading either Romeo Doubs or Christian Watson ahead of the upcoming season.

The front office added Texas standout Matthew Golden with the No. 23 overall pick — the team’s first first-round wide receiver selection in over two decades — and then followed that move by drafting TCU’s Savion Williams in the third round, intensifying competition within the receiver group.

While the Packers’ draft moves were aimed at securing long-term offensive weapons for quarterback Jordan Love, the influx of talent has already raised questions among current receivers. Notably, Jayden Reed reportedly sought clarification on his role going forward.

With several young and promising pass-catchers under contract through 2026, the team may consider dealing Doubs or Watson, both of whom are entering the final year of their rookie contracts.

Doubs has been a steady contributor and carries a larger cap hit than Watson, thanks to a performance-based salary escalator.

Meanwhile, Watson is recovering from an ACL tear and may begin the season on injured reserve, making him a cheaper and less tradeable asset.

Still, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox speculated that Green Bay could release Doubs to free up $3.4 million in cap space, though such a move would be controversial given his contributions.

The idea of cutting Doubs is questionable, as he’s not only been reliable but has developed a solid connection with Love.

While the team might decide not to re-sign him after 2025, he remains a valuable piece in the short term. If Golden and Williams take time to adjust to the NFL, Doubs could prove indispensable, which gives Green Bay reason to hold onto him until preseason competition plays out.

Ultimately, while trade speculation around Doubs has gained traction — partly due to his contract situation and a brief disciplinary issue in 2024 — it’s unclear whether the Packers will act on it.

They may opt to maintain depth through training camp and assess player performance before making any roster moves. Doubs’ fate could depend less on finances or rumors and more on how he performs once the season preparation begins.
