Veteran quarterback Mike Wright has committed to East Carolina University, marking his fourth collegiate stop after previous stints at Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Northwestern.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound dual-threat signal-caller brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the Pirates’ quarterback room as they prepare for the 2025 season.
Wright began his college career at Vanderbilt, where he appeared in 26 games over three seasons, starting 11. During his time with the Commodores, he amassed over 2,000 passing yards and 905 rushing yards, accounting for 21 passing touchdowns and 11 rushing scores.
He then transferred to Mississippi State for the 2023 season, playing in all 12 games with three starts, and contributing both through the air and on the ground. In 2024, Wright joined Northwestern, appearing in three games with two starts, and continued to showcase his dual-threat capabilities.
At East Carolina, Wright joins a quarterback room led by Katin Houser, a Michigan State transfer who took over as the Pirates’ starter midway through the 2024 season.
Houser led ECU to a 5-1 finish, including a Military Bowl victory over NC State, despite playing with a fractured wrist. With Houser recovering from offseason surgery, Wright’s arrival provides valuable depth and competition at the position.
Wright’s athleticism and experience make him a potential asset in various offensive packages. Known for his speed and agility, he has the ability to contribute in short-yardage and goal-line situations, as well as provide a change of pace in the Pirates’ offensive scheme. His presence also offers insurance should injuries arise during the season.
East Carolina opens the 2025 season on August 28 with a rematch against NC State. As the Pirates aim to build on their strong finish last year, Wright’s addition to the roster adds experience and versatility to the team’s quarterback depth chart.
