The Montreal Canadiens reached the playoffs and are aiming to build on that success during the offseason.
With much of their young core already signed to long-term deals, Montreal is expected to shift focus toward acquiring more talent.
According to NHL insider Arpon Basu of The Athletic, the Canadiens may have their sights set on trading for Boston Bruins center Pavel Zacha, despite the fierce rivalry between the two teams.
Basu notes that while a full rebuild may not align with Boston’s current roster—especially with stars like David Pastrňák and Charlie McAvoy in their prime—a retooling phase is possible.
Trading Zacha, who has two years remaining on his $19 million contract, for a quality draft pick and prospect could be appealing to Boston.
Basu also suggests that Zacha, while perhaps not Montreal’s top option for the No. 2 center role, would still be a solid addition.
The Bruins, who have Elias Lindholm locked in long-term and the No. 7 overall pick, might see value in acquiring one of Montreal’s first-rounders at 16 or 17.
Zacha had a productive season with 47 points (14 goals, 33 assists) over 82 games. With two first-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft and a deep prospect pool, Montreal has the assets to make a deal. Acquiring another center like Zacha aligns with the Canadiens’ needs heading into next season.
Despite their playoff appearance, the Canadiens remain focused on improvement. As the youngest playoff team, management recognizes the importance of building on their progress.
Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Jeff Gorton said the team is far from finished and still has critical roster decisions ahead.

One dilemma is whether to give their promising prospects a chance to earn roster spots or bring in more experienced veterans.
Gorton acknowledged that striking the right balance between youth and experience will be a key challenge for GM Kent Hughes this summer, especially with just over $8.6 million in cap space available.
Montreal’s need for a center has been clear all season, and after staying quiet at the trade deadline, many expect the team to make a move this summer.
A scout told RG.com’s Marco D’Amico that acquiring a top-six center is a likely priority, particularly with rising star Ivan Demidov set to join the team.
With strong assets in hand, the Canadiens appear poised to make a significant push toward becoming a serious Stanley Cup contender.
