Cincinnati Makes Bold and Baffling Roster Decision: Promising Bat Sent to Minors as Team Signs Struggling Former Diamondbacks Player

The Cincinnati Reds made an unexpected roster move ahead of their series against the Chicago Cubs. While the return of Hunter Greene from the injured list was anticipated, the addition of utility veteran Garrett Hampson came as a surprise.

Hampson was signed to a major-league deal, while outfielder Rece Hinds was optioned to Triple-A Louisville.

Hampson, recently released by the Diamondbacks after a lackluster showing (.167/.359/.167 in 18 games), brings defensive flexibility with experience at shortstop, second base, and center field. However, the decision to demote Hinds — one of the few power threats in the lineup — raised eyebrows, especially with the Reds struggling offensively.

To make room on the 40-man roster, pitcher Carson Spiers was transferred to the 60-day IL.

Manager Terry Francona explained that Hampson’s versatility is valuable with several key players — including Candelario, Encarnacion-Strand, Marte, and Fraley — sidelined. The Reds also lost versatile defender Tyler Callihan earlier this season due to a fractured arm.

While Hampson boosts the Reds’ infield coverage, his career offensive production (.239/.302/.358, 69 wRC+) suggests minimal impact at the plate. Meanwhile, the return of ace Hunter Greene offers a much-needed lift after a tough series loss to the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates, as he takes the mound for the series opener against Chicago.
