The New York Giants are quickly approaching a potential salary cap crunch in 2025, highlighted by their recent decision to restructure Brian Burns’ contract. As the offseason progresses, the team faces some tough financial decisions, particularly as they look to manage their roster under the cap.
One player who could be affected is defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches, who started 15 games last season and appeared in 16 the year before. While he brings valuable experience and is a respected leader among younger teammates, his position on the roster could be in jeopardy.

According to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, Nunez-Roches is among the top candidates to be cut for cap relief. Letting him go would save the Giants $3.6 million, though it would leave behind $1.4 million in dead money. This move appears more likely after the team added veterans Roy Robertson-Harris and Jeremiah Ledbetter, and drafted Darius Alexander.
With increased competition on the defensive line and Nunez-Roches entering the final year of his contract at age 32, his role is uncertain. Duggan noted that despite his leadership value, a $5 million cap hit for a backup lineman may be hard to justify in a tight financial climate.
Ultimately, Duggan suggests Nunez-Roches could be released or asked to take a pay cut if younger, cheaper players perform well during training camp.
