The New York Giants began their first full practice of the 2025 season without one of their most anticipated young stars on the field. Wide receiver Malik Nabers, the team’s first-round draft pick in 2024 and projected WR1, was absent as he continues to deal with a lingering toe injury.
The issue, which head coach Brian Daboll says has been present since Nabers’ college days, has the team treading carefully during Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
“Nothing serious,” Daboll reassured reporters. “We’re being mindful of his toe that he’s had… just trying to be smart.” According to the coach, Nabers has not required surgery and the team is sticking to a conservative rehab plan. The injury reportedly dates back to at least the 2023 season, when Nabers played through the discomfort during his standout campaign at LSU.

Despite the injury, Nabers dominated at the collegiate level, finishing his final season at LSU as an All-American and cementing his status as one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the draft. His ability to produce at a high level while managing the injury gives the Giants confidence in his toughness and long-term potential. However, with no need to rush his recovery during non-contact practices, the Giants are prioritizing his health over early reps.
Organized Team Activities are light, non-padded sessions designed more for mental reps and conditioning than physical play. The team sees little benefit in risking a setback by having Nabers practice at less than 100%. With the real evaluation period not beginning until training camp in late July, the Giants are focused on making sure their top receiver is fully ready when it counts.

Nabers’ absence is a reminder of how vital he is to the team’s plans for the 2025 season. The Giants, who struggled offensively last year, view him as a key difference-maker and centerpiece of their passing attack. His chemistry with new quarterback Jaxson Dart is also something the coaching staff hopes to develop during camp, once Nabers is back on the field.
For now, the Giants will continue to monitor his progress, keeping him sidelined until his toe is completely healed. The team has a detailed plan in place for his return, and while his absence from early practice is notable, it’s a calculated decision. With high expectations surrounding Nabers’ second NFL season, the Giants are clearly taking no chances with their rising star.
