Following the conclusion of the 2024 season, many anticipated a major roster shake-up for the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite finishing with a winning record, the organization talked about a need for a “reset,” sparking speculation that stars like Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, and Willson Contreras could be traded. Yet, none of those players were moved.
As the team entered the 2025 season, they largely stuck with their existing core. Still, trade rumors circulated widely, with social media buzzing about possible high-profile deals.
However, the narrative began to shift as the Cardinals gained momentum in May, climbing to a 31–24 record and sitting just behind the Cubs in the standings. What once looked like an inevitable sell-off now appears far less certain.
In a conversation with Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, team president John Mozeliak hinted that the front office may reconsider its approach.
“After some tough seasons, having a sense of optimism around the club really matters,” Mozeliak explained. “This year was always about evaluating our players and letting the results guide us. A lot of people assumed we’d be sellers, either during the offseason or at the deadline — but with how things are going, that perception may be shifting.”
