Cubs Double Down on Bullpen Repairs: Cubs Strike Again, Adding Another Top-Tier Talent in Bold Move to Fix Their Bullpen Troubles

This strategy might not suit every team, but it could pay off for the Chicago Cubs. As NL Central leaders, they’re powering ahead with strong offense, while their starting rotation has been solid.

The real challenge has been the bullpen, which President Jed Hoyer continues to tweak. Manager Craig Counsell seems to have a stronger grip on the roster this year, so taking a chance on a recently released pitcher from the Mets makes some sense.

Génesis Cabrera was designated for assignment by New York after posting a 3.52 ERA and 1.304 WHIP over 7.2 innings. Those are decent numbers, raising questions about why the Mets let him go. The Cubs signed him almost immediately and already put him to work. Whether this move pays off remains to be seen.

Throughout the spring, Chicago has cycled through relievers to patch up the bullpen. Injuries like Porter Hodge’s and struggles from veterans such as Ryan Pressly have made it difficult. Still, the Cubs keep winning — but there’s concern whether this bullpen-by-committee strategy can hold off division rivals like the Cardinals and Brewers.

Cabrera debuted for the Cubs on Friday, throwing 1.1 innings, striking out three, and walking one. Interestingly, the Mets lost all six games he appeared in this season, even though he only had two poor outings. In Chicago, Cabrera may settle into a long-relief role, especially in games that are already out of reach.

While this bullpen approach has worked so far, it’s uncertain how long it will last. As the trade deadline nears, roster flexibility will shrink, and the Cubs may have to rely more on consistent arms. Cabrera may not be a game-changer, but for now, he’s pitching decently — even if his teams haven’t won during his appearances.
