Top talent has told his longtime agent that he plans to return to the NHL after missing the last two seasons.
Pat Brisson shared with several media outlets that Toews contacted him Wednesday, expressing he’s fully ready to pursue a comeback.
Now 37 and a free agent, Toews is free to negotiate with any of the NHL’s 32 teams ahead of free agency, which begins July 1.

If successful, his return would be a major milestone. Toews, a Winnipeg native and one of the NHL’s top 100 players of all time, spent 15 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2007 to 2023, captaining the team to three Stanley Cup titles and serving as a franchise icon. He also won Olympic gold with Canada in 2010 and 2014.
Toews stepped away two years ago due to chronic immune response syndrome and long COVID, at the same time Chicago traded star Patrick Kane and began a rebuilding phase.
