Very few hitters in baseball strike genuine fear into opponents, but Wilyer Abreu seems to have that effect—especially when facing the Texas Rangers.
While names like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Babe Ruth are legendary for their dominance, Abreu has carved out a personal legacy of tormenting the Rangers.
In just 22 at-bats against Texas, Abreu has lit them up, hitting .500 with four home runs, nine RBIs, five walks, and seven extra-base hits—an incredible stat line against some of the Rangers’ best pitchers.
If he could bring that level of production to the Rangers’ own lineup, it could finally give their pitching staff consistent leads to work with.
This raises a natural question: Is Abreu even available? There’s a chance he might be. The Red Sox are in a unique position, balancing a youth movement with strong veteran depth and the No. 1 ranked farm system in MLB.
Despite their 20-19 record in 2025, they may soon be forced to make roster decisions as top prospect Roman Anthony pushes for a major league spot.

With Jarren Duran cemented in the outfield, the Red Sox will likely have to choose between Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela. Offensively, Abreu stands out, but Rafaela’s superior defense—particularly in center field—gives him an edge.
This crowded outfield is blocking Anthony’s path to the majors, and the Red Sox may need to deal from this surplus to address a growing need for future pitching to support rising ace Garrett Crochet. That’s where the Rangers could step in.
Acquiring Abreu won’t be cheap. A package would likely include two pitching prospects—such as Alejandro Rosario, Kohl Drake, or Mitch Bratt—and one position player like Dylan Dreiling, Alejandro Osuna, Abimelec Ortiz, or Justin Foscue.
One possible offer might be Bratt, Foscue, and reliever Marc Church. Still, it may take including someone like Kohl Drake to get Boston’s attention—though that’s a tough pill to swallow.
The Rangers desperately need an offensive boost, and it might even be worth considering trading Kumar Rocker if it means fixing the lineup.
Abreu seems like a near-perfect fit—and beyond his potential impact with Texas, acquiring him would also ensure the Rangers never have to face him again.
