The Chicago Blackhawks have unveiled ambitious plans to significantly expand their practice facility, Fifth Third Arena, transforming it into a premier destination for both professional and community hockey in the Midwest.
Announced Tuesday, the expansion will add substantial upgrades to the current complex, which will grow to more than 250,000 square feet. The revamped facility will feature state-of-the-art training amenities, multipurpose areas, and a dedicated community hockey space designed to support NHL stars, emerging talent, and youth players alike.
A key highlight of the project includes the addition of two new ice rinks. One of these, known as Championship Arena, will seat 2,000 fans and serve as the new home of the Chicago Steel, a member of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the top junior ice hockey league in the U.S. The Steel previously played at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva and The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

Beyond its athletic components, the expansion will include Centennial Hall, a tribute to the franchise’s more than 100-year legacy, featuring homages to Blackhawks legends, Hall of Famers, and Stanley Cup champions. Additionally, Rocky’s Bar will open as a memorial to the late Chairman Rocky Wirtz.
Blackhawks Chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz emphasized the vision behind the project, stating, “Through the Fifth Third Arena expansion, we are creating the epicenter of hockey in the Midwest. This venue is where NHL superstars train alongside rising talent, creating an environment where championship dreams can take flight.”
President of Business Operations Jaime Faulkner added, “Whether you’re an athlete, a hockey parent, an event-goer, or a neighbor, we want this to be a place where people come together — to be entertained, to be inspired, and to feel part of something bigger. This project brings elite sports and community spirit under one roof.”
Once completed, the expanded Fifth Third Arena will represent a significant milestone not only for the Blackhawks but also for the broader Chicago hockey community.
