The New York Giants signed veteran quarterback Russell Wilson during free agency, even though they used a first-round draft pick on Jaxson Dart.
For now, it looks like Wilson will be the starter, at least early in the season. This marks Wilson’s third team in three years after playing for the Broncos in 2022 and 2023, and the Steelers in 2024.
Many fans have been wondering why Wilson picked the Giants over staying in Pittsburgh or joining another team.
Was it because the Giants didn’t have an established young quarterback yet? Or was it something else?
Wilson recently explained his decision on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony—and it came down to two key people: wide receiver Malik Nabers and head coach Brian Daboll.
“I turned on the film and saw Malik Nabers, and man, this dude’s a superstar,” Wilson said. “When you watch every catch, every rep, every play—not just the highlights—you see how dynamic he is. When he touches the ball, he’s gone.”
As a quarterback, having a playmaker like Nabers makes any offense more exciting. Wilson knows he won’t have to worry about a lack of weapons—he’ll be throwing to one of the most explosive young receivers in the league.
Wilson also spoke highly of Daboll, calling him a “brilliant mind” and praising his football IQ. “I really liked Brian Daboll.
Watching him over the years, seeing him win Coach of the Year—he sees the game in a special way,” Wilson said.

He added that he had already visited the Giants last year before signing with the Steelers and came away impressed.
Wilson knows the pressure is on. If he doesn’t perform, rookie Jaxson Dart could take over quickly.
But if Wilson plays well, the Giants benefit from having a steady veteran presence while giving Dart more time to develop.
Bringing Wilson in was a smart move by the Giants—it gives them flexibility and a chance to compete now while grooming their future quarterback for the long term.
