The Cincinnati Reds placed star pitcher Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to a right groin strain.
Greene, who pitched five innings in Tuesday’s 4-2 win over the Brewers, reported discomfort and exited early. It was only his third outing since returning from a similar injury on May 23.
“We spent a lot of time last night discussing it with him and the training staff,” manager Terry Francona said, per The Athletic. “Since it’s happened twice now, we need to figure out what’s going on. His lower back is also starting to bother him, and we want to see if that’s connected. The decision was pretty straightforward, even before the MRI.”
An MRI was scheduled for later that day.
In response, the Reds signed veteran left-hander Wade Miley and moved pitcher Rhett Lowder (with forearm and oblique issues) to the 60-day IL.

Miley had opted out of his minor league deal with the Reds earlier in the week and became a free agent. He is recovering from elbow surgery and last pitched in the majors on April 16, 2024, with Milwaukee.
Greene, 25, an All-Star in 2024, has a 4-3 record with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts this season, totaling 73 strikeouts and only 14 walks across nearly 60 innings. He was the Reds’ No. 2 overall draft pick in 2017 and holds a career 22-28 record with a 3.74 ERA in 83 starts.
Miley, 38, is expected to rejoin Cincinnati’s rotation—possibly as early as Monday in Cleveland. This marks his second stint with the Reds, having previously played for them in 2020 and 2021.
