Mind Blowing Comeback: Cardinals Re-Sign Experienced Player Ryan Helsley Due Too….

The St. Louis Cardinals have been the subject of trade speculation throughout the season, especially with the July 31 trade deadline approaching. Despite the rumors, the team is performing well and currently sits just five games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Amid these trade talks, one of the team’s All-Stars is reportedly open to discussing a contract extension.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, closer Ryan Helsley is interested in negotiating a new deal with the Cardinals. While there has been speculation that the team might trade the 30-year-old, the club’s recent success could prompt the front office to pursue a long-term agreement instead.

Goold explained, “There’s a lot to unpack in those questions. First, while talks haven’t started yet, that doesn’t mean it’s off the table. Helsley is still open to negotiating, and as long as that’s the case, there’s a chance the team will engage. Second, considering the current market, top relievers are earning around $20 million per year. Helsley could command over $16 million annually, possibly in a four-year deal with a fifth-year option or a straight five-year contract.”

Helsley is set to become a free agent after this season, and he’s expected to draw interest from several teams if he hits the open market. The Cardinals, who are fighting for a playoff spot, may not want to risk losing him for nothing, which adds urgency to either a trade or extension decision.

Helsley has been excellent this year, posting a 3.00 ERA and a 1.429 WHIP over 21 innings, along with 23 strikeouts and 13 saves.
