A recent poll by the Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling suggests that the Democratic Party may be eyeing former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright for a potential Congressional run.
Wainwright, 43, played his entire 18-year MLB career with the Cardinals from 2005 to 2023.
According to Inside Elections, the poll tested Wainwright as a possible challenger to Republican Rep. Ann Wagner in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District.
Participants were given a short biography highlighting Wainwright’s career achievements, personal background, and charitable work before being asked about their opinions and voting preferences in a hypothetical match-up between him and Wagner.
The survey also included a follow-up “informed ballot” question and polled respondents on another potential Democratic candidate, Bob Clark—a billionaire construction executive and political fundraiser from St. Louis.

Although Missouri’s 2nd District isn’t currently considered a competitive race, Inside Elections noted that a high-profile outsider like Wainwright could shake up the race and attract national attention.
Despite the interest, Wainwright hasn’t commented publicly on any political ambitions. Sources close to the situation say he’s not likely to enter the race, especially as he begins his new role as a broadcaster with FOX following his retirement.
During his MLB career, Wainwright earned three All-Star selections, a 2006 World Series title, and posted a 3.53 ERA with 200 wins and over 2,200 strikeouts.
