Ryan Donato wanted to remain in Chicago, and the Blackhawks were eager to keep him on board.
After some negotiation, both sides got what they wanted.
On Wednesday, the Blackhawks confirmed that they’ve re-signed the energetic forward to a four-year deal worth $16 million. Donato, who was approaching unrestricted free agency, chose to stick with his fifth NHL team.
“Ryan brings intensity and effort every night, which has really helped us over the past two seasons,” said GM Kyle Davidson. “He’s been vital to our offense, and we’re thrilled he’ll be with us for the next four years.”
Donato, 29, is coming off his best NHL season, scoring 31 goals and adding 31 assists across 80 games. Those numbers far surpassed his previous highs of 16 goals (2021-22, Seattle) and 18 assists (his debut season with Chicago).
Talks about an extension had started before the trade deadline, but a deal wasn’t reached in time. Still, the Blackhawks decided to keep Donato and revisit the conversation later.
“There was a quick discussion back then that didn’t materialize, but there wasn’t really a roadblock,” Davidson told reporters in April. “After the deadline, things quiet down. Now that the season’s over, it’s picked up again.”

With Donato signed, the Blackhawks check off a key item as they attempt to rebuild from a tough season. Chicago finished at the bottom of the Central Division and second-to-last in the NHL with a 25-46-11 record.
A native of Boston and former Harvard standout, Donato has played 483 career games with the Bruins, Wild, Sharks, and Blackhawks, tallying 108 goals and 119 assists. He joined Chicago in 2023 on a two-year, $4 million deal.
“I really believe in the direction we’re heading,” Donato said in April. “Some players are going to make big strides this offseason, and fans will be surprised how fast things can change.”
