Injury Fallout: After Another Pitching Injury, Yankees Make Tough Call to Cut Ties With Popular Veteran

Despite a string of injuries, the New York Yankees’ pitching staff has held up impressively. After losing ace Gerrit Cole for the season during spring training and with reigning Rookie of the Year Luis Gil still sidelined, the team has managed to stay competitive.

However, the rotation suffered another setback as Ryan Yarbrough was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain. In response, the Yankees called up rookie Allan Winans for his major league debut.

This latest injury could prompt a deeper shakeup within the pitching staff. As Max Goodman of NJ.com reports, the Yankees still have multiple depth options to consider.

Marcus Stroman

These include top prospect Cam Schlittler, veteran Carlos Carrasco, left-hander Brent Headrick, and bullpen arm JT Brubaker, who could potentially be stretched into a starting role.

With so many alternatives, the team might consider moving on from Marcus Stroman.

Stroman, signed last offseason for $37 million, has had a disappointing stint with the Yankees. He’s made just three starts, posting an 11.57 ERA before going down with a knee injury.

With stronger internal options now available, the Yankees could view Stroman’s contract as a sunk cost and opt to release him. While it would mark a frustrating end to his time in New York, the team’s surprising pitching resilience could leave little room for a comeback.
