As the MLB trade deadline approaches on July 31, 2025, the New York Yankees are facing several key roster decisions. With the offense cooling off and depth concerns rising, the team is exploring upgrades—particularly in the infield and pitching staff.
While they could promote a young prospect as a long-term solution, the Yankees are also expected to pursue more seasoned talent to strengthen their World Series push.
One name gaining traction is Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. According to Yahoo Sports’ Russell Dorsey, Suárez is among the top trade candidates this summer.
The veteran slugger, known for his right-handed power, is hitting .234 with 21 home runs and 58 RBIs. Since 2019, only five players—including Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani—have hit more home runs than Suárez.
With free agency looming at the end of the season, he could be a short-term but impactful addition. His leadership and clubhouse presence are also viewed as valuable assets by contending teams.
Suárez is in the final year of a seven-year, $66 million deal, making a trade plausible only if the Yankees are open to extending his contract.
Analyst Buster Olney recently mentioned the Yankees as a likely destination should Arizona decide to sell, and many believe Suárez’s bat could be a perfect complement to Judge and the rest of New York’s lineup.
Another name being linked to New York is former Yankee and current Pirates utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
The Yankees are reportedly monitoring his availability, as his ability to play multiple positions—including shortstop, third base, and the outfield—would add depth and flexibility to the roster. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale highlighted both the Yankees and Giants as potential landing spots for Kiner-Falefa at the deadline.
The Yankees’ recent offensive slump is adding urgency to trade talks. Over a seven-game stretch, the team scored only seven runs and lost six games—something that hasn’t happened since September 1908. With the lineup underperforming and playoff races heating up, the pressure is on the front office to make bold moves before the deadline.
