Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson may have joined the New York Giants this offseason for a shot at reclaiming a starting role, but he recently admitted that one rising star played a big part in sealing the deal. Speaking at Fanatics Fest in New York City, Wilson shared that wide receiver Malik Nabers was a major reason he chose to sign with the Giants.
“I came here because of him, big reason for it,” Wilson said while seated next to Nabers on stage. “I really wanted to play with a guy who was special like him.” Wilson also praised the team’s overall effort and defensive talent, calling the Giants “a group of guys who work hard and get after it.”
Nabers, the Giants’ standout receiver, had a stellar rookie season despite instability at quarterback. The LSU product racked up 109 receptions for 1,204 yards and 7 touchdowns, becoming the team’s most consistent offensive weapon. Even with subpar quarterback play, Nabers managed to shine and earn respect around the league.
Wilson, who is entering a new chapter in his career after a turbulent end in Denver, appears eager to build chemistry with a dynamic target like Nabers. The receiver’s passion for winning — something he voiced openly during the team’s 2024 struggles — may have further attracted Wilson, who’s hungry to prove he still belongs among NFL starters.
Though Wilson isn’t the MVP-level player he once was, his experience and deep-ball ability could unlock more of Nabers’ game. After a rookie season spent catching passes mostly from Daniel Jones, Nabers may finally have the quarterback support needed to elevate his performance even more.
While the Giants have many questions heading into the 2025 season, the connection between Wilson and Nabers is one reason for optimism. If their chemistry builds quickly, New York’s offense could look dramatically improved — and Wilson’s decision to join the Giants might prove to be his smartest move in years.
