After playing shorthanded in two wins over the Yankees, the Reds placed outfielder/first baseman Connor Joe on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to hand, foot and mouth disease.
To fill his spot, the team recalled infielder/outfielder Ryan Vilade from Triple-A Louisville.
Joe, who last appeared in a game Saturday against St. Louis, is dealing with an illness that, while usually seen in children, can cause fever, mouth sores, and skin rashes, according to the CDC.
It typically clears up on its own within a week or so.
Manager Terry Francona commented, “I’ve never heard of this before, and I’ve got more kids than anyone. But it’s real — his feet are really bothering him.”

Joe, acquired from the Padres on May 9, has a .245 average and a .631 OPS over 22 games with the Reds this season.

He wasn’t the only player sidelined recently — right fielder Jake Fraley also missed time with a sore left shoulder after crashing into the wall on a leaping catch Monday.
“We were trying to avoid using him Tuesday night, so we were pretty thin,” Francona said.
Vilade, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals on June 14.
He has appeared in 27 MLB games across three teams since 2021 and was hitting .279 with seven homers in 54 Triple-A games this year between Louisville and Memphis.
