Injury Update: Reds Make Major Move as Another Key Player Return from What Was Feared to Be a Season-Ending Injury

The Cincinnati Reds opened their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies with a loss on Friday night.

Ahead of Saturday’s second game, the team made a notable roster change that will affect their offensive lineup.

The Reds reinstated outfielder Jake Fraley from the injured list and optioned infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand to Triple-A Louisville.

The move raises eyebrows, as many believed Encarnacion-Strand was ready to remain in the majors.

Still, with the Reds boasting a deep, young group of hitters, difficult decisions have to be made to manage limited roster spots.

Fraley returns with a .224 batting average, five home runs, and 17 RBIs this season, along with a .707 OPS.

Though he hasn’t matched his 2024 performance when he hit .277, the left-handed bat brings versatility and experience.

Capable of playing all three outfield positions and first base, Fraley’s return could be key in energizing a youthful lineup pushing for the postseason.

Encarnacion-Strand, meanwhile, has struggled to replicate his strong rookie numbers.

He’s hitting just .208 with six home runs, 19 RBIs, and a .610 OPS in 130 at-bats. While his early promise suggested he might be the Reds’ first baseman of the future, he’ll need to rediscover his form in Triple-A.

At just 25 years old, there’s still plenty of time for him to develop and earn another shot.

Currently sitting at 48-47, the Reds are fourth in the NL Central despite a winning record—a frustrating spot to be in.

However, with only four games separating them from a Wild Card berth, Cincinnati must keep pushing.

With Elly De La Cruz leading the charge and the pitching staff showing improvement, a playoff run remains well within reach.
