Reds Roll the Dice: Reds Shake Things Up, Calling Up Rising Star to Rescue Slumping Lineup and Spark Playoff Charge

Cincinnati Reds prospect Sal Stewart, drafted out of Florida’s Westminster Christian School in 2022 with the 32nd overall pick, was known early on for his elite hitting ability—a skill that earned him a commitment to Vanderbilt University, which he turned down to go pro.

Since entering the minor leagues, he’s lived up to the hype, establishing himself as one of the top young hitters in baseball.

Over more than 1,200 plate appearances, Stewart owns a stellar .389 on-base percentage, and he’s been especially impressive in 2025, slashing .306/.377/.473 at Double-A Chattanooga.

His performance recently earned him a promotion to Triple-A Louisville and a spot in the All-Star Futures Game.

At just 21 years old, Stewart’s rapid rise suggests a big-league debut may not be far off.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s third basemen have struggled significantly in 2025, combining for a weak 64 wRC+, one of the worst marks in the majors.

Their designated hitters haven’t fared much better, posting a below-average 94 wRC+. Stewart, who plays third and can fill in at DH, could potentially provide a spark in either spot.

While he’s clearly part of the team’s long-term vision, the real question is whether he could be the short-term solution the Reds need.

Should Cincinnati call him up this season? Could Stewart help push the team toward a playoff run?
