Stunning Trade Shakes Chicago: High-Stakes Deadline Drama Unfolds as Blackhawks Deal Young Forward to Rival Team in a Stunning Power Play for Immediate Impact

Although it appeared the Chicago Blackhawks were finished with their offseason moves aside from a few expected restricted free agent signings, new reports indicate they may still be exploring trade opportunities.

According to The Fourth Period, the Blackhawks have received inquiries about forward Lukas Reichel and are open to considering offers for the former first-round pick.

Now 23, Reichel hasn’t met the expectations set for him during his time with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL or in his early NHL appearances, where he registered just 15 points over 23 games.

Initially projected to develop into a key top-six winger for Chicago’s rebuild, his inconsistent production—especially compared to his more promising 2022–23 campaign—has raised concerns.

Over the past two seasons, Reichel has been shuffled around the lineup but spent most of this past year on the fourth line, where he tallied 22 points across 70 games. While his speed and flashes of skill continue to show potential, his consistency and compete level still fall short of what the team is hoping for.

He’s currently in a tough position—lacking the physical edge needed for a bottom-six checking role, while also not producing enough to justify a top-six spot.

As the Blackhawks prepare to rely more on their young talent this season, Reichel has slid down the depth chart and may be at risk of being left out of the final roster.

The Fourth Period notes that while Chicago isn’t actively shopping Reichel, they are listening to offers—and may even be open to including him in a package deal with prospects or draft picks in exchange for a more immediate roster upgrade.

Although it’s possible the Blackhawks give Reichel one more year to prove himself, especially under the guidance of a new coaching staff, it’s clear that patience within the organization is wearing thin.

A strong training camp could still earn him another chance, but time is running out for him to secure his place in the lineup.
