Cincinnati Lands Game-Changing Move— Reds Plan One Last Big Trade as They Get Star Outfielder from Guardians and Boost Playoff Chances

The Cincinnati Reds have already made big headlines at this year’s trade deadline with bold acquisitions, including starter Zack Littell and a surprising in-division deal for elite defender Ke’Bryan Hayes.

But if President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall truly wants to turn this Reds team into a legitimate playoff contender, there’s one more move that could complete the puzzle — trading for Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan.

While Hayes instantly upgrades the infield defense and Littell adds stability to the rotation, the Reds still lack a true catalyst at the top of the lineup — and Kwan fits that role perfectly.

Known for his exceptional contact skills, sharp plate discipline, and Gold Glove defense, Kwan may not be a flashy power hitter, but he could be the most valuable position player still available.

He’s the missing piece for a deep October run.

The Reds’ offense has shown flashes of potential but has been marked by inconsistency and frequent strikeouts.

Despite a talented young core, the team lacks a reliable leadoff presence — something Kwan provides in abundance.

With a .286/.351/.410 slash line this season, nine home runs, and 11 stolen bases, he’s also walked more than he’s struck out, a rare and elite quality in today’s game.

Kwan’s career stats (.285 average, .358 OBP, and multiple Gold Gloves) show he’s not just consistent, but impactful. In Cincinnati’s more hitter-friendly park, his offensive ceiling could rise even higher.

Defensively, he’s among the top left fielders in the league, with +13 Defensive Runs Saved this year alone.

Adding him to a lineup alongside Hayes and a solid pitching staff would shift run prevention from a weakness to a strength.

The Reds have been unsettled in left field all season. With inconsistent play from Benson, injuries to Fraley, and Friedl moving around the outfield, Kwan would bring much-needed stability.

Plus, Reds manager Terry Francona knows exactly how to utilize him, having managed Kwan in Cleveland.

Importantly, the Reds have the assets to make this deal happen.

They’ve already shown a willingness to move top prospects, and with their depth in the infield and bullpen, they can craft a package for Kwan without draining the farm system.

He’s also under contract through 2027 at a team-friendly salary, making him a long-term addition — not just a short-term fix.

Cleveland has already shown they’re sellers, having dealt Shane Bieber to Toronto. Reports suggest they’re also open to moving Kwan.

While the price won’t be cheap, the Reds have the pieces to pull off a deal.

And if they’re truly aiming to make noise in the playoffs, this is the final piece they need.

The time is now. Cincinnati has made significant strides in just a few days.

If they want to finish what they’ve started, trading for Kwan could turn them into a real October threat.
