Star Infielder Sidelined: Injury Forces Texas Rangers to Name Official Replacement for Marcus Semien

The Texas Rangers placed second baseman Marcus Semien on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left foot contusion, only the second IL stint of his 13-year career.

To balance the move, the team activated Adolis García, who returned from a left ankle sprain.

Semien suffered the injury Thursday in Kansas City after fouling a ball off his foot during the first inning of a 6-4 loss.

He is currently in a walking boot, and the team has yet to determine the full extent of the damage.

García, meanwhile, was reinstated the first day he was eligible after taking live batting practice on Friday ahead of Texas’ 4-3 win over Cleveland.

He was back in the starting lineup Saturday.

Semien’s only other IL stint came in 2017 with Oakland, when he missed nearly three months due to a wrist injury.

Since signing his $175 million, seven-year deal with Texas before the 2022 season, he had appeared in 609 of the Rangers’ 615 games prior to this setback.

Manager Bruce Bochy noted that Semien rarely accepts time off, saying, “For him to admit it might take a while, you know it’s serious.” The injury occurred the same night Evan Carter fractured his wrist after being hit by a pitch.

Carter was placed on the IL Friday and could miss the rest of the season.
