The Texas Rangers made two major roster moves Saturday ahead of their game against the Cleveland Guardians at Globe Life Field.
Second baseman Marcus Semien was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left foot contusion, while outfielder Adolis Garcia was activated after recovering from a left ankle sprain, according to Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports.
Semien injured his foot Thursday against the Kansas City Royals when he fouled a pitch during the first inning and left the game in the third.
After X-rays, an MRI, and a CT scan over the past two days showed no fractures, he remains in a walking boot and continues to experience discomfort.
He is scheduled for further evaluation by a foot specialist.
Manager Bruce Bochy noted Semien’s frustration, saying, “He’s going to be grouchy… he sees himself as needing to be out there every day.
For him to accept that it’s going to be a while shows something is going on.” This marks only the second time in Semien’s 13-year career that he’s landed on the injured list, the first being in 2017 with the Athletics.
Since signing a seven-year, $175 million deal with Texas before the 2022 season, Semien has been remarkably durable, missing just six of 615 games from 2022–2024.
This season, the 34-year-old has played 127 of 130 games, posting a .230/.305/.364 slash line with 15 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 62 runs scored—all from second base.
He also leads the team in career Rangers stats for games played (609), hits (610), triples (12), walks (239), runs (386), and total bases (1,027).
With Semien sidelined, rookie Cody Freeman is expected to start at second base Saturday against Cleveland.
On a positive note, Garcia returns to the lineup on the first day he’s eligible after a 10-day IL stint for a left ankle sprain (Aug. 13–22). The 32-year-old outfielder participated in live batting practice Friday and did not require a rehab assignment.
Adolis Garcia
Garcia has appeared in 116 games this season, hitting .224/.266/.388 with 16 home runs, 64 RBIs, 24 doubles, and 46 runs scored, leading the Rangers in doubles, RBIs, and extra-base hits (40). This is his first IL stint since 2020.
The Rangers are also still without outfielder Evan Carter, who fractured his right wrist in the same game Semien was injured and could miss the remainder of the season.
With these moves, the Rangers’ 40-man roster remains full, while Cody Bradford, Tyler Mahle, and Josh Sborz remain on the 60-day injured list.
