From the Brink of Career-Ending Injury to Reds’ Hope: Cincinnati Reds Receive Major Lift as Veteran Pitcher’s Comeback from Career-Threatening Injury Sparks Playoff Hopes

The Cincinnati Reds have felt Tyler Stephenson’s absence both in the lineup and behind the plate, especially during last week’s extra-innings loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Manager Terry Francona’s decision not to pinch-run for Jose Trevino in the 10th inning highlighted the team’s lack of a dependable backup catcher, an issue that extends throughout the organization.

While Will Banfield made his MLB debut recently, relying on an inexperienced catcher this late in the season is risky.

Fortunately, Stephenson’s injury may not sideline him for the rest of the season. Although he fractured his thumb, recent updates suggest he could return in 10–14 days.

He has not yet faced pitches but plans to do so soon, using a protective guard on his left thumb after seeing a specialist in Arizona.

If Stephenson returns as expected, he could be back for the Reds’ upcoming homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets.

Cincinnati, currently 2½ games behind the Mets for the NL Wild Card, also hopes to have pitchers Nick Lodolo and Chase Burns available, and may call up top prospect Sal Stewart.

Catching depth has long been a challenge for the Reds and remains a concern for the offseason.

However, Stephenson’s return could provide the boost Cincinnati needs to push toward its first postseason appearance since 2020.
