With September call-ups right around the corner, Cincinnati Reds fans are eager to see which players will be added to the roster.
Most clubs bring up one pitcher and one position player, though the only true limit is the 14-pitcher maximum.
Considering how worn down Cincinnati’s bullpen has been, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Reds went with both.
While fans are pulling for top prospect Sal Stewart to be among the promotions, the team also has a chance to create a feel-good moment.
That moment could come from Tejay Antone, who is attempting yet another comeback from elbow surgery.
Antone was sidelined last spring and had to undergo his third career procedure.
Against all odds, the right-hander is now on a rehab assignment with the Chattanooga Lookouts.
The big question: will the Reds give him a chance to complete an improbable return to the majors this year?
Antone’s inspiring effort has already produced headlines.
Going into Sunday, he had appeared in six minor league games this season—a remarkable accomplishment on its own.
But Reds fans know his ultimate goal is to get back to the big leagues before the 2025 season concludes.
Across those six outings, Antone has pitched 7â…“ innings, giving up just one run on seven hits.
He’s also struck out eight batters, including a three-punchout performance last week against the Cardinals’ High-A affiliate.

Tejay Antone
A September 1 activation might be too ambitious.
After more than a year away, it’s tough to imagine Antone being added to the roster the instant the calendar flips.
His last major league mound appearance came on April 7, 2024—where he didn’t even retire a hitter.
If the Reds fall out of the playoff hunt late in the season, the decision to give Antone another shot will be easy.
But if Cincinnati remains locked in the Wild Card race, the team may hesitate to throw him into such a high-pressure situation.
Still, it’s the kind of challenge Antone would surely embrace.
