Stunning Twist: Rangers Shock Baseball World by Bringing Back Forgotten Draft Pick Nearly a Decade Later to Cover for Injured Star in Dramatic Roster Shakeup

I was away this past weekend celebrating close friends’ 30th wedding anniversary, so blogging was light.

That means I’m only now catching up on the news that the Texas Rangers purchased the contract of veteran Dylan Moore to replace Corey Seager, who landed on the 10-day injured list with appendicitis.

To create space on the 40-man roster, Evan Carter was transferred to the 60-day IL.

I had already written on Thursday about Seager’s appendicitis and the hope that his recovery won’t keep him out for too long.

What’s striking, though, is that Moore—of all people—ended up filling his roster spot.

Just released by the Mariners last week, Moore had signed a minor league deal with Texas for depth at Round Rock, only to be called up almost immediately.

Moore’s story has come full circle. Originally a 7th-round pick of the Rangers in their unusual 2015 draft, he was dealt the following year in a three-team trade involving Jeff Francoeur.

After bouncing around with the Braves and Brewers, he signed with Seattle, where he carved out a surprising six-year career as a versatile utility man, hitting .205/.310/.381, winning a Gold Glove in 2024, and amassing 7.2 bWAR while playing nearly every position on the field.

Now, after a disappointing 2025 season led to his release, Moore finds himself back where it all began—returning to Texas and joining Rowdy Tellez as another ex-Mariner picked up by the Rangers to help patch their injury-riddled roster.

Baseball has a funny way of coming full circle.
