Rangers Stun the League by Snatching Up Yet Another Key Piece Recently Cut Loose by the Mariners”

The Rangers have added infielder Donovan Solano and right-hander Cal Quantrill on minor league deals, the club told reporters (via Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News).

Both veterans had recently been cut loose — Solano by the Mariners and Quantrill by the Braves.

Solano’s move comes shortly after his former Seattle teammate Dylan Moore joined Texas in late August following his own release.

Moore was quickly promoted when injuries hit the Rangers’ infield — Marcus Semien landed on the IL, and Corey Seager underwent an appendectomy soon after.

Moore has since seen regular action against left-handed pitching, while Rowdy Tellez, another ex-Mariner pickup, has been used off the bench since signing in June.

At 37, Solano gives Texas a veteran option for an infield that’s been riddled with injuries.

Cody Freeman and Josh Smith are handling most of the middle infield work, while Jake Burger has dealt with three separate injuries.

Moore and Ezequiel Duran currently slot ahead of Solano as right-handed bench bats, but he could be the next call-up if another setback occurs before Seager returns.

Signed by Seattle for $3.5MM last winter, Solano hit just .252/.295/.344 over 69 games, well below his usual production after five straight solid seasons (2019–24). Though the Mariners used him exclusively at first base, he brings experience at second and third.

Quantrill, meanwhile, joins his third team of the season. The former top draft pick signed a $3.5MM deal with Miami over the offseason but posted a 5.50 ERA in 24 starts.

The Marlins waived him after failing to trade him, and the Braves claimed his contract at the deadline.

That gamble backfired, as Quantrill was shelled for 12 runs across just two starts before being released.

Overall, he owns a 6.00+ ERA across 117 2/3 innings with a below-average strikeout rate (16.6%) and rising home-run issues.

His best year remains a 2021 campaign in Cleveland, when he logged a 3.38 ERA over 186 1/3 innings.

The Rangers’ rotation has also been hit hard. Tyler Mahle still needs another rehab outing, Nathan Eovaldi likely won’t return this year, and Jon Gray has been ruled out for the season.

Lefty Jacob Latz has filled in as the fifth starter behind Jacob deGrom, Merrill Kelly, Jack Leiter, and Patrick Corbin, but the club has little depth if another injury strikes.

Kumar Rocker is unavailable while working on mechanics, and Tampa Bay recently claimed swingman Caleb Boushley off waivers.

Quartile isn’t a high-upside addition, but his durability gives Texas a fallback option for a spot start.

Despite the setbacks, Texas remains within 1.5 games of a Wild Card berth.

Neither Solano nor Quantrill is postseason-eligible, and both will return to free agency this winter.

Their signings are strictly about shoring up organizational depth for the final three weeks.

If promoted, each would earn the prorated league minimum of $740K for time spent on the big-league roster.
