Phillies Face Crucial Offseason Decisions

The Philadelphia Phillies’ offseason could go in two very different directions — one very positive, the other potentially damaging. The ideal outcome is keeping their roster core together, but there’s also the real possibility of losing key players.

A major focus centers on Kyle Schwarber, whose return would likely come at a steep price.

Schwarber’s Next Contract Could Be Massive

“Kyle Schwarber is expected to command a large payday, and the Phillies will likely have to meet a high figure to prevent him from joining another team,” TBOH’s Matt Davis wrote. “That number could fall around five years and $150 million — $30 million annually — and he could even push for more.”

The Risk of Re-Signing Schwarber

While Schwarber’s power is undeniable, some believe re-signing him might be a gamble.

“The Phillies shouldn’t re-sign Schwarber to a multi-year deal,” TBOH’s Matt Grazel argued. “Not keeping him will hurt the lineup, but committing long term could backfire if his production drops. Either decision carries risk.

The roster needs change, and letting Schwarber walk could give Dombrowski the chance to truly reshape the team.”

Possible Destination: Texas Rangers

If the Phillies decide to part ways with Schwarber, MLB. com’s Mark Feinsand suggests the Texas Rangers could be his next home.

“Players entering their age-33 season rarely rank this high on free-agent lists, but Schwarber is an exception,” Feinsand wrote.

“His power led the National League with 56 home runs and 132 RBIs while playing all 162 games. Though he can fill in at left field, he’s essentially a full-time DH who instantly upgrades any lineup.”

Rangers Could Make a Big Upgrade

For Texas, Schwarber would effectively replace Joc Pederson, who struggled early last season.

Given the Rangers’ payroll flexibility and Schwarber’s proven track record, signing him could be a significant offensive boost — one that might push them right back into playoff contention.
