Red Sox Face Big Offseason Decisions
While free agency grabs the headlines, the Red Sox know minor league depth can make or break a season. Injuries and surprises make having ready talent in the farm system crucial.
Catcher Chadwick Tromp Hits Free Agency
The Red Sox lost minor league catcher Chadwick Tromp on Thursday when he elected free agency, according to MLB. com. Tromp also spent last season in the Orioles and Braves organizations.
MLB Experience, But Mostly in the Minors
Tromp has appeared in six major league seasons but never played more than 25 games in a year. The 30-year-old has mostly served as a backup or injury replacement, playing eight big league games last year.
Red Sox Gave Him a Shot—It Didn’t Stick
Signed to a minor league deal on July 26 after leaving Baltimore, Tromp struggled in Triple-A Worcester, hitting just .135/.183/.167 in 28 games. Overall in the minors, he batted .190.
Depth Matters: Could Tromp Have Helped?
Last season, the Red Sox had to call on Blake Sabol when Connor Wong was injured. Having someone like Tromp with MLB experience could have provided valuable backup if injuries struck again.
Tromp’s Next Move
Now a free agent, Tromp will likely seek a minor league deal where he can offer immediate catching depth. In his MLB career, he has 172 at-bats and six home runs.
