“Boston Pulls Off a Surprising Free-Agent Coup, Bringing in Ex-Yankees Pitcher to Strengthen Their Rotation”

Like every other MLB team, the Boston Red Sox are looking to bolster their starting rotation this offseason. While Garrett Crochet and Bryan Bello give them a solid top end, questions remain about who will fill out the rest of the rotation. Young pitchers such as Payton Tolle, Kyle Harrison, and Connelly Early could step in, but it’s uncertain how many will be ready to handle back-end roles in 2026. To bridge the gap, Boston will likely pursue additions via free agency or trades.

At the trade deadline, the Red Sox were linked to Minnesota Twins’ Joe Ryan, and they could revisit that possibility this offseason. On the free-agent front, a former New York Yankees right-hander could also be on their radar.

Michael King, who was traded from the Yankees to the Padres in the 2023-24 offseason as part of the Juan Soto deal, could be a target if healthy. After a strong 2024 season, injuries limited him to just 15 starts in 2025. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa notes that King would be a natural fit for Boston, both on the field and as a homegrown storyline. King’s familiarity with the AL East, combined with his ability to pitch in relief, adds value, particularly for postseason depth. Despite his 2025 setbacks, acquiring him could be a cost-effective way to add a difference-making starter.

In 2024, King posted a 13-9 record with a 2.95 ERA over 173.2 innings, struck out a career-high 201 batters, and recorded 4.1 WAR. His innings-eating profile aligns with Boston’s organizational priorities.

Red Sox Likely to Look Outside for Rotation Help

Whether through trade or free agency, the Red Sox have several options to improve their rotation. As GM Chaim Bloom noted, they aim to remain competitive while keeping an eye on the future.

Top free-agent targets include left-handers Framber Valdez (Astros) and Dylan Cease (Padres). On the trade market, options include Joe Ryan, Edward Cabrera and Sandy Alcantara (Marlins), and Tarik Skubal (Tigers). However, Skubal is expected to remain in Detroit unless a truly exceptional offer arises.

If Boston is unable to land a big-name trade acquisition or free-agent, a healthy Michael King could serve as a strong alternative to strengthen the rotation.
