Carter Hawkins Confirms Versatile Switch-Hitting Prospect to Elevate the Chicago Cubs to the Next Level

The Chicago Cubs are excited about a rising talent in their system. Owen Ayers, a 24-year-old switch-hitting catcher, has caught the attention of fans and front-office personnel alike, and Cubs General Manager Carter Hawkins has confirmed that Ayers has the potential to make a significant impact.

Ayers turned heads in the 2025 Arizona Fall League, batting an impressive .379 over 20 games for the Mesa Solar Sox. He earned the AFL Breakout Player Award, leading the league in walks with 22, striking out only 10 times in 88 plate appearances, and hitting five doubles and three home runs — including a crucial three-run homer that secured a playoff victory for Mesa.

Before his AFL success, Ayers had also been impressive with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the Class A Carolina League, driving in 18 RBIs in 18 games before a broken right hand temporarily sidelined him. His ability to rebound and maintain high performance in the AFL demonstrated his resilience, skill, and mental toughness.

Owen has all the tools we look for — versatility, plate discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure,” Hawkins said. “He’s a switch-hitter who can play multiple positions, and with his work ethic, we believe he can take his game — and our organization — to the next level.”
