South Carolina Gamecocks fans are on the verge of a pivotal offseason move, as head coach Shane Beamer targets Mike Furrey, the team’s wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator, to take over as the new offensive coordinator and bring stability to the 2026 offense.
After parting ways with former OC Mike Shula in early November, Beamer tested Furrey by giving him play-calling duties for the final games of the season, giving the staff a chance to evaluate his leadership, scheme knowledge, and rapport with players. Sources indicate Furrey has impressed across the board, making him the frontrunner for the permanent role.
“The offensive coordinator hire is a critical decision for our program,” Beamer said. “We’re not going to rush it just to fill the spot. We want the right person, someone who can bring continuity, lead our players, and help us grow as a team.”
Furrey’s familiarity with the Gamecocks’ roster, combined with his NFL and college-level coaching experience, makes him a logical choice to stabilize a position that has seen significant turnover in recent years. His ability to connect with key offensive players and understand the current scheme gives South Carolina a chance to improve its production in both the rushing and passing game.

Timing has been a factor in the decision, with signing day and the transfer portal overlapping, but Beamer remains confident the right hire is within reach. “We want someone who can hit the ground running and help our offense reach its potential next season,” he said.
If Furrey is officially named offensive coordinator, he will become the fourth different playcaller under Beamer in six seasons — a bold move that could pay dividends if he can bring leadership, stability, and a spark to the Gamecocks’ offense in 2026.
An official announcement is expected soon, giving fans a clear view of the direction South Carolina intends to take as it prepares for the upcoming SEC campaign.
