Kansas State football has confirmed it will not participate in a postseason bowl game this year, despite reaching six wins in the season finale.
The Wildcats became bowl-eligible after a 24-14 home victory over Colorado, but head coach Chris Klieman’s sudden retirement shortly afterward created uncertainty around the program. With former Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein named Klieman’s successor, the team still faced challenges, as Klein remains Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator through their College Football Playoff run.
“A source confirmed the school ultimately decided against a bowl appearance due to the coaching transition and other uncertainties, including roster availability,” reported Brett McMurphy of On3.
Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor noted he consulted with team leaders regarding the bowl game. Contrary to some reports, the decision was not made by a player vote.
The Big 12 Conference has fined Kansas State and Iowa State $500,000 each for opting out of postseason play. “While the Conference acknowledges the difficult timing around coaching changes, it is responsible for fulfilling its contractual obligations to its bowl partners,” the Big 12 stated.
If Kansas State had accepted a bowl invitation, it was expected to play in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Dec. 30. Full bowl pairings will be announced as confirmations continue throughout Sunday.
