Washington (8-4, 5-4 Pac-12) will take on Boise State (9-4, 6-2 Mountain West) in the Bucked Up L.A. Bowl on Dec. 13 at SoFi Stadium, announced during college football’s version of selection Sunday.

Boise State earned its spot by winning the Mountain West, defeating UNLV 38-21 in the conference championship. The Broncos’ only matchup against a power conference team this season ended in a 28-7 loss to Notre Dame.

While the term “familiar foe” usually refers to opponents the Huskies face regularly, the Washington-Boise State rivalry is more sporadic. The two first met in 2007, with the Huskies winning 24-10 at home. Their next encounter came in the 2012 Las Vegas Bowl, where Boise State got the win. In 2013, Washington returned to a renovated Husky Stadium and routed the Broncos 38-6.

In 2015, during Jake Browning’s first start and Chris Petersen’s second season with the Huskies, Boise State edged Washington 16-13 in a close contest. Petersen, by then a highly respected coach, later led the Huskies to two Pac-12 championships and appearances in the College Football Playoff, Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and posted a 6-0 record against Washington State. One of his final games included a 38-7 victory over Boise State.

The most recent matchup showcased Michael Penix Jr., who threw for 450 yards and five touchdowns as Washington dominated Boise State 56-19.

The Huskies have won the last two meetings and aim to make it three straight in the upcoming L.A. Bowl.
