Texas Rangers star shortstop Corey Seager has decided to remain with the Rangers, rejecting a trade to the Boston Red Sox. Sources indicate that Seager turned down the move because the financial terms offered by Boston were not substantially higher than his current $31 million annual salary, making a switch less appealing.
Boston had explored acquiring Seager to strengthen their infield, along with other targets such as Ketel Marte, Isaac Paredes, and Brendan Donovan, as well as free agents Bo Bichette, Pete Alonso, and Eugenio Suarez. Despite preliminary talks, the Red Sox failed to present a package that convinced Seager to leave Texas.
Seager’s 2025 Performance
Seager, 31, had a productive 2025 season despite injury setbacks, including two hamstring strains and an appendectomy. In 102 games, he posted a 138 wRC+, though he fell short of 30 home runs for the first time as a Ranger. His 445 plate appearances were the fewest since his final year with the Dodgers in 2021.
Seager has been a cornerstone for the Rangers since signing his 10-year, $325 million contract before the 2022 season. He helped lead Texas to a 2023 World Series title, earning World Series MVP honors that year.
Why Boston Couldn’t Close the Deal
The Red Sox also faced roster considerations. Trevor Story, who primarily played second base last season, would likely need to shift positions to accommodate Seager, potentially impacting young talents such as Ceddanne Rafaela and the outfield alignment, particularly if Jarren Duran were moved in a trade.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow admitted that trade talks are often slow, noting: “Many teams are comfortable keeping their players, and we are as well. That adds a layer of difficulty to making these deals work.”
Rangers Payroll and Stability
The Rangers have already trimmed payroll this offseason by non-tendering Adolis García and Jonah Heim, and trading Marcus Semien to the Mets. Even with these moves, Seager’s salary and value as a franchise cornerstone made staying in Texas the most logical decision.
Looking Forward
By staying with Texas, Seager ensures financial security, continuity with the team, and the chance to continue competing at a high level. Meanwhile, the Red Sox will need to explore alternative options to strengthen their infield, as Seager’s decision closes the door on a potential blockbuster move.
