BREAKING: Star Linebacker Reverses Transfer Decision, Set to Anchor Kansas State Defense Next Season

Kansas State football has received a major boost for the 2026 season as Austin Romaine, one of the Big 12’s top linebackers, has decided to remain with the Wildcats after initially entering the transfer portal. Romaine, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound junior from Hillsboro, had explored his options but ultimately chose to return to his role anchoring K-State’s defense.

Romaine has been a standout performer for the Wildcats, earning Big 12 second-team all-conference honors in both 2024 and 2025. He has also been highly rated nationally by Pro Football Focus, thanks to his strong tackling, leadership, and ability to read opposing offenses. In 2025, Romaine recorded 66 tackles over nine games, including a season-high 11 stops against Texas Tech, before a hand injury cut his season short.

As a sophomore, he totaled 96 tackles, establishing himself as the centerpiece of K-State’s linebacker corps. His decision to remain ensures continuity in the Wildcats’ defense under head coach Collin Klein and new defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson. “I feel like this is the best place for me to continue growing as a player and as a person,” Romaine said. “I’m excited to get back to work with my teammates and help lead this defense next season.”

Romaine’s return is a significant lift for the Wildcats, who have experienced a wave of roster changes following the coaching transition from Chris Klieman to Klein. Other key players, including running back Joe Jackson and backup quarterback Blake Barnett, have also confirmed their return for 2026, giving K-State stability on both sides of the ball.

With Romaine back in Manhattan, K-State’s defense retains one of its top leaders and proven playmakers, setting the stage for a competitive season in the Big 12. Fans and teammates alike can now look forward to seeing Romaine resume his pivotal role in the Wildcats’ linebacker corps.
