BREAKING: Blake Harrell Confirms East Carolina’s Starting Quarterback for Military Bowl

East Carolina head coach Blake Harrell has officially named Mike Wright Jr. as the starting quarterback for the Pirates in Saturday’s Military Bowl against Pitt. Wright, a versatile transfer with experience at Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Northwestern, steps into the role following the offseason departure of key players, including quarterback Katin Houser.

The Pirates have faced significant roster upheaval leading into the bowl game, losing both offensive and defensive coordinators—John David Baker (Ole Miss) and Josh Aldridge (South Florida)—as well as top skill-position players Yannick Smith, Jayvontay Conner, and leading rusher London Montgomery. With Baker’s replacement, Jordan Davis, unlikely to run the offense immediately, Harrell will assume playcalling duties himself, relying on Wright to lead the offense.

Wright brings five seasons of Division I experience and positional versatility, making him a stabilizing presence for a Pirates offense adjusting to a new lineup. He will be supported by senior running back Marlon Gunn Jr. and leading receiver Anthony Smith as East Carolina aims to compete despite the significant offseason losses.

The Military Bowl kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland, with the Pirates looking to overcome a season of roster and staff disruptions.
