The Boston Bruins have made a move to strengthen their roster, completing a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs to acquire winger Matias Maccelli as the playoff race heats up.
Boston, firmly in contention and looking to make a deep postseason push, addressed a key need by adding scoring depth to its forward group. While David Pastrnak has continued to carry the offense and Morgan Geekie has emerged as a reliable scorer, the Bruins had been seeking more production throughout their top nine.
The newly acquired winger brings offensive upside and versatility. At 25 years old, he fits both Boston’s short-term playoff ambitions and its longer-term roster planning. Despite a down season in Toronto, the Bruins believe his struggles were more reflective of the Maple Leafs’ inconsistency than a decline in his ability.

Maccelli previously enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2023–24, recording 17 goals and 57 points, and Boston is confident a change of scenery will help him rediscover that form. The Bruins see him as a playmaker who can create offense, limit turnovers, and contribute on a scoring line.
He is expected to slot into the Bruins’ top nine immediately, giving the coaching staff more flexibility and adding balance to the lineup. The move also came at a relatively low cost, with Boston parting with minimal future assets, making it a low-risk addition with significant upside.
With this trade finalized, the Bruins signal they are serious about contending now while still keeping an eye on the future.
