Kansas State is turning to a familiar and trusted name as it continues to reinforce its football coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season.
According to an ESPN report, the Wildcats are set to reunite with veteran coach , who is leaving Illinois to return to Manhattan as associate head coach and wide receivers coach. The move brings back an experienced leader who already understands Kansas State’s culture, expectations, and player-development philosophy.
Thad Ward previously served as Kansas State’s wide receivers coach during the 2022 season, where he played a key role in developing the Wildcats’ passing attack and earning the trust of both players and staff. His return signals a clear emphasis on continuity and proven experience as head coach Chris Klieman continues to fine-tune his program.

Before his first stop in Manhattan, Ward built a strong reputation during two separate stints at Illinois. He initially joined the Fighting Illini under Lovie Smith from 2016 to 2018, then returned to Champaign in 2023 as part of Bret Bielema’s staff. Over the past three seasons, he held the title of assistant head coach and became one of the most recognizable figures on the staff.
Ward is perhaps best known in Illinois circles for popularizing the “Littyville” mantra during his early years with the program—a slogan that became synonymous with energy, confidence, and wide receiver production. His ability to connect with players and create identity within position groups has long been viewed as one of his strongest assets.
For Kansas State, the hire adds leadership at a critical time. The associate head coach title underscores Ward’s influence beyond his position group, giving Klieman another veteran voice in staff decisions, player development, and locker-room leadership.
Illinois, meanwhile, will now face another offseason coaching vacancy as Bielema reshapes his staff. Despite the departure, the program remains on solid footing after posting 19 wins over the past two seasons, a stretch that reflects growing stability and competitiveness in Champaign.
As for Kansas State, Ward’s return represents more than just a reunion—it’s a strategic move aimed at strengthening leadership, maintaining continuity, and positioning the Wildcats for sustained success moving into the next phase of the program.
