BREAKING:Three-for-One Cardinals–Mariners Trade Could Reshape Seattle’s Roster With All-Star Addition

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan has emerged as one of the most discussed names in trade speculation this offseason. With the Cardinals appearing to embrace a rebuilding approach, moving on from Donovan would align with that strategy.

After earning a spot on the National League All-Star team last season, Donovan’s value around the league is undeniable. His ability to play multiple positions defensively makes him an appealing option for nearly any contender.
Curt Bishop of St. Louis Cardinals OnSI recently proposed a mock trade that would send Donovan to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for three highly regarded prospects: Jurrangelo Cijntje, Michael Arroyo, and Lazaro Montes.

“The Mariners are reportedly open to moving switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, their No. 7 prospect,” Bishop wrote. “The Cardinals are in need of additional pitching depth, making him a logical target. Michael Arroyo provides a right-handed bat, another organizational need for St. Louis. As for Lazaro Montes, while the Cardinals have outfielders like Joshua Baez nearing the next level in 2026, adding more young talent would further strengthen their future.”
From Seattle’s perspective, however, the deal represents a significant overpayment. Surrendering three premium prospects for Donovan would be difficult to justify under any circumstances.

That said, the on-field fit is undeniable. The Mariners are searching for infield help following Jorge Polanco’s departure in free agency, and Eugenio Suárez could also leave this winter. Donovan’s versatility would allow him to step in seamlessly at multiple infield positions and provide an immediate upgrade.

While Seattle should explore a potential deal for Donovan, parting with this particular trio of prospects would be a step too far.
